One of Sean’s favourite sayings is that cyclists are generally far more awesome than the rest of the population. And certainly – whilst this is hardly a failsafe appraisal of human nature – it plays out in our experience of bike mechanic students of Cycle Systems Academy.
One of the best things about teaching bicycle mechanics is that we generally have the most awesome collection of human beings turn up every month to learn.
We remember the chap who travelled to London when we were based there, and slept in a tree because he couldn’t afford a hotel, for example.
Or the lady who was fighting cancer and went on to open a bike shop.
Or the ex-soldier whose PTSD flared up every time the gas board started ripping up the road outside our building. (This poor student had come back another time – only to find the electricity board were ripping up the road AGAIN. Gotta love Hackney.)
Now and again though – we see a student with an absolutely exceptional life story. And last month that was Kevin Stacey – an ex-piper from the Black Watch Regiment of the British Army.
Kevin Stacey, as a Level 3 graduate is just one of many who have changed their life through the love of cycling and started up an inspiring new business.
www.42cycling.com is where Kevin can now be found, but his journey here has been far from easy or straightforward as you will find out!
